Displacement 18.5 tons. Motor 80 hp. Perkins fresh water cooled through a heat exchanger. 2:1 gearbox. Shaft 50mm Stainless steel. Prop 4 blade bronze.
Fuel in steel tanks 550 ltr. each side total 1100 ltr. Water 550 ltr. each side in engine room 600 ltr. under fwd. floor total 1700 ltr.
Nav. Gear etc: Radio with aerial at mast top. Also areal for phone at mast top. Garmin sat-nav. Garmin auto-pilot. Steering, Hi-drive hydraulic. Anchor winch, Muir. chain 70 m of 12 mm short link. Anchor 65lb. CQR. Spare 45lb. Danforth. Twin rollers at sprit.
Mast and rigging: timber masts stainless steel standing rigging. Jib on a boom, main and jib handled from the wheelhouse door. Sails heavy dacron. Mizzen boom is dinghy lift only. All stainless steel winches.
Layout and accommodation: Engine room is under the wheelhouse floor, there is good access all around the motor. Battery box in front of motor, houses 3 pairs of batteries, 200 amp hr. on starting, 200 amp hr. on lighting both charged by 85 amp alternator. 200 amp hr. on refrigeration is charged by 65 amp alternator which also charges the winch 100 amp hr. battery fwd. near the winch. There is a watertight bulkhead each end of the engine room. Bilge pumping is by hand operated gusher near the wheelhouse door and an automatic electric pump. Cocks from forward and aft compartments.
From fwd. in forecastle: Chain locker with drains at bottom, open lockers on bulkhead . V berths with lockers under, fan and LED lights, louver door to companionway. On stb. side a double cabin ie. double size bunk with side locker and hanging locker, fan and LED light. louvre door to companionway. Across on port side a toilet with hand basin, and a single cabin with foot of bunk under the wheelhouse, a side cabinet, fan, LED light and louvre door to companionway. Stairs to wheelhouse offset to port.
Wheelhouse houses the nav. position to stb. with a sliding door to the deck and a hatch to engine room under foot. Behind is the chart top with a cabinet and fridge under. Behind further is a dinette seating 4 that converts to a bunk if required, storage under seats. Aft beside the door is a full height cabinet. Outside on rear deck is a shower/toilet accessible from stb. deck. On the port side the galley bench starts at the bulkhead and houses timber top then a stainless section with a stove recess with 2 burner and grill gas stove and a deep sink with salt and fresh water taps over. Under the bench, cabinets with draws behind the doors occupy the space. Behind this is a bunk 1700 mm long with a freezer under. The wheelhouse is fully screened except the sliding door at the nav. position.
On the aft deck behind the toilet is a brine tank / locker / seat and to port a seat / hatch to the lazaret space of about 15 cubic metres in which is the steering, the freezer unit, a power point for an extra portable freezer and general storage.
The aft deck is about 8 square metres and has a gas outlet for a BBQ. The cabin top which covers the rear deck is 28 square metres and rain water can be caught and drained to the tanks. The handrails are 25 mm gal pipe on 20mm stanchions SS welded and fixed all round with an opening door at the transom for access to the duck board.

. Fringedweller construction details

After 18 months building, Fringe dweller was launched in April 2012 at Cardwell Qld. Built at Yungaburra on the Atherton tablelands by Kevin Mackenzie, Master shipwright, to his own design, previously having designed and built many boats at the Gold coast with good speed, efficiency and seagoing ability. Fringe dweller was designed to be stable and easily driven thus being economical to run with roomy accommodation. She has proved to satisfy all design features.
Keel 200 mm x 200 mm Rose gum fitted outside with a full length steel shoe. Stem 250 mm x 200 mm rose gum. Hog 275 mm x 50 mm Rose gum. Frames in bottom 100 mm x 50 mm, on topsides 75 mm x 50 mm northern hardwood. Stringers, chines and deck clamp 150 mm x 50 mm rose gum cold bent. Battens @ 350 mm max. 75 mm x 38 mm rose gum. Deck beams from 150 mm x 50 mm northern hardwood. Cabin beams 100 mm x 35 mm brown mahogany clear finished @ 300 mm crs. Planking bottom 25 mm ply copper fastened to battens, bottom and topsides fibre glassed and filled and boarded to be fair. Deck, cabin sides and cabin top ply with deck and cabin top fibre glassed. All fastenings are copper, stainless steel or galvanised iron, paint coated before fixing. Natural timber: Hoop pine, mahogany, silk wood and silver ash have been used in the fit out. The bulwark caps are 150 mm x 38 mm rose gum, the samson post is 150 mm x 150 mm kwila, the quarter posts are 100 mm x 100 mm northern hardwood.
A seawater deck hose is installed forward for cleaning chain mud etc. and on aft deck for general use. The shower has salt and fresh water available.
Performance: The motor is propped to 2100 rpm at which in slack conditions will give 8.2 Kn. Cruising at 1700 rpm. 7 Kn. can be maintained. When sails are employed in a fair breeze of say 10 to 15 Kn. and 1300 rpm. 7 + Kn. Can be expected. Full sails can be carried up to 25 Kn. While the sails have reef points I have never used them. The sails have sail covers so can remain on the spars without damage.
The dinghy is a 3.6 m Quintrex with a 9.8 hp. Tohatsu motor which will plane if required. It stores comfortably on the aft cabin top and is launched by the mizzen boom and hand winches.
