1952 Herreshoff H28 Ketch A true classic for the traditional wooden boat lover, the Herreshoff H 28 ketch has long been a favourite for its thoroughbred sailing qualities and attractive lines. This appealing yacht has been regularly exhibited and much admired at Wooden Boat Festivals in Hobart, Geelong and Paynesville. Built in Hobart, Tasmania by two cabinet-makers under the supervision of master shipwright Jock Muir, she was planked in now rare Huon Pine using roved copper nails. Launched in 1952 from Battery Point, her traditional features include bronze framed glass cabin ports, wooden cheeked blocks, bronze sheet winches and a classic binnacle compass. Her cabin coach house was fully rebuilt in 2013 and she has been carefully maintained in sail away condition. The delightful accommodation includes a forward V-berth double and 2 settee berths, galley with two-burner spirit stove and sink plus a private marine toilet. A central varnished timber drop-side table sits between the settee berths. She has varnished Oregon spars comprising a new main mast in 2010, mizzen mast and booms plus a spinnaker pole, a full wardrobe excellent quality sails, mostly Doyle, and many of recent age. The yacht is powered by a regularly serviced Volvo Penta MD2020 3-cylinder diesel engine with an in-line shaft fitted new in 2003. Seaworthy and offshore capable, H 28s are fantastic boats to sail in any weather. She has cruised Port Phillip Bay extensively and has sailed across Bass Strait and to and from the Gippsland Lakes in recent years. She is still handy around a club race course and has acquitted herself well, winning numerous trophies over the years. Some of her more modern sailing aids include a 2015 Raymarine 7 Series GPS with Chart Plotter cockpit mounted display, a Garmin 12 GPS and a VHF radio transceiver. This well maintained and attractive classic H28 ketch has a fascinating history and will continue to provide enjoyable sailing for many years to come.
