Mercury MerCruiser has developed a next generation 8.2lt big-block marine engine that produces more power and has better mid-range acceleration, lower emissions, and superior fuel efficiency. The engine was produced by Mercury MerCruiser engineers and drew on the expertise of Mercury Racing specialists.

The next generation, naturally aspirated big block features high-performance aluminium cylinder heads that can produce 380hp, while its HO (high octane) counterpart will deliver 430hp. The engine runs on 87 octane and achieves remarkably low oil consumption.

Mercury said that input from boatbuilders and dealers means access to the engine’s service points and connections was significantly improved, helping simplify installation and maintenance.

Mercury MerCruiser’s project manager Derric Drake, said he was very pleased with the result. "Not only did the team achieve superior performance while adding a catalyst, they maintained fuel efficiency and improved serviceability without adding cost," he said

Mercury said the khe key features of the new engine are as follows:

* More power

* Enhanced mid-range torque

* World-class, low oil consumption achieved via modern piston and ring pack design

* Catalyst-equipped for ultra-low exhaust emissions, virtually eliminating exhaust fume odour

* Runs on 87 octane fuel

* Higher charging amperage at idle (+ 15amp)

* Improved installation via simplified access to connections

* Easier identification of, and access to, service points

* Low noise and vibration

* 100% closed cooled from the factory

* Equipped with Mercury's exclusive, air-actuated seawater drain system

* Traditional MerCruiser factory warranty and service support

The new 8.2lt MerCruiser engine will be available in sterndrive and inboard configurations, with base and HO ratings. The new models will also be completely compatible with MerCruiser options, including Axius, SmartCraft and SeaCore. Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) is available on the inboard models.

The models will be protected by the Guardian system to help prevent catastrophic engine damage.

Availability in Australia and New Zealand has not yet been clarified.
