The Whitsunday Sailing Club’s annual Fun Race was a huge success last Saturday, September 12, with more than 90 boats entering the event.

With a good steady wind of 15 to 20kts, competitors had great sailing conditions combined with the social camaraderie which goes with the event.
Many of the entries got into the spirit of the occasion with themed crews and decorated boats.

From the smallest tinny to impressive maxi yachts and many spectator boats, everyone joined in the fun. One of the highlights of the event is the judging of the Miss Figurehead as each boat crosses the finish line!

Line honours went to Merit skippered by Leo Rodriguez with the prize consisting of an empty bottle of Mt Gay Rum. The three winning team yachts included Cynophobe skippered by David Chittleborough, FOS skippered by Dale Mitchell, and Airlie Sails skippered by Blair Mitchell.

Best dressed crew was awarded to Riff Raff while best decorated boat went to Shangri La with a Playboy theme.
The smallest entry was Quantum Leap skippered by Greg Hammond.
A special award was also given to Grey Ghost for Rescuing Another Boat.

Organisers said a group of sailing enthusiasts came up for the event with their trailersailers from South Australia along with yachts from Victoria and NSW.
The first Fun Race took place in 1977 and the tradition has continued each year with many yacht people really enjoying unwinding after the climax of Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks.

Publicist Corrie Gardner said: "The atmosphere on the water was fantastic with everyone in high spirits for this fun conclusion to the hectic racing calendar.

"It’s an opportunity for serious racers, social sailors and visitors to the area to get out on the water together and really enjoy the happy-holiday attitude and stunning location that is Airlie Beach."
