Sandringham Yacht Club shines at Clubs Victoria Achievement Awards

AWARDS — SYC wins Club of the Year

Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) is Victoria’s Club of the Year (non Gaming) for 2010.

The accolade is one of two awards the SYC received at the annual Clubs Victoria Achievement Awards gala evening at Crown Palladium on November 14. SYC also took out the Occupational Health and Safety Award.

Club officials said it was a huge achievement for SYC as it was judged against all clubs in Victoria, many of which are stronger both in membership and financially.

Last year, SYC took out the Clubs Victoria award for the Best Redevelopment or Alteration of a Club without Gaming.

The Clubs Victoria Awards recognise the efforts and achievements of clubs over the past 12 months and are only awarded to the most progressive and dynamic clubs in Victoria.

ClubsVIC is the voice of Victoria's network of not-for-profit licensed clubs that provide the community with its social, sporting and cultural infrastructure.

SYC, the premier yacht club in Melbourne, has been going from strength to strength following the opening of its new $12m clubhouse last year.

SYC’s clubhouse includes a members’ bar, five-star public restaurant, function rooms, training rooms and the club also offers on-site training for all ages through the SYC Boating Academy.

Furthermore, the Harbour View restaurant at SYC was a finalist in the Restaurant of the Year award category. Trading seven days a week for lunch and dinner, the restaurant is also open to the public and overlooks Sandringham Harbour and the SYC Marina.

SYC says it has also recently upgraded its hardstand area, itself a Clean Marinas award winner. SYC also won the Victorian Marine Industry Environment Award in 2007 and 2009.

"Winning the prestigious Victorian Club of the Year award is colossal recognition for SYC," said Richard Hewett, SYC CEO.

"Our committees, members, stakeholders and staff should be congratulated and feel immensely proud of their club.

"It is both humbling and satisfying, and impeccable timing that we should be recognised like this on the eve of our Centenary Year in 2011. Let’s celebrate all year long!" he said.

"Obviously I’m pretty chuffed," said SYC commodore Steve Richards. "But I think the staff of the club should be congratulated for their efforts. Their attention to member details and the initiatives they have brought to the club — especially in the food and beverage areas are something that we as members can be proud of.

"We are taking the lead in OH&S, certainly around the Bay if not elsewhere in Australia," he added. "Whether it’s on the marina, on the hardstand or on the water, our focus is on safety for everyone."
