International Marine — the company behind Caribbean Boats — served up a bit of a Caribbean curveball to the Trade-a-Boat crew when they asked us to swing by the fibreglass boat builder’s factory to check out a top-secret project.

Much to our surprise, the iconic Victorian boatbuilder unveiled a smart sedan – no flybridge; not even a single rod holder. Meet the Caribbean 420 Express.

Caribbean 420 Express sedan

Based upon the legendary Caribbean 40 Flybridge Cruiser hull platform, the Caribbean 420 Express marks a bold new era for tradition-loving Caribbean. It also marks a shift in their target market, aimed at luring in families or cruising couples, rather than the gamefishing enthusiasts who consistently seek out the Caribbean name.

International Marine managing director Richard Spooner and sales and marketing manager John Barbar developed the first boat of this new range with South Australian managing director of Marina Boat Sales Andrew Craddock. Indeed, a Caribbean 510 Express is already on the drawing board.

Following her debut at 2015 Sydney International Boat Show, the Caribbean 420 will return to Adelaide with Craddock as a stock boat, where he is confident her versatile size will find favour with customers.

The Caribbean 420 Express is also the 55,555th vessel produced since International Marine was established in 1958 – a fitting milestone for this significant new chapter in Caribbean’s history.

Layout

Interior of Caribbean 420 Express
The Caribbean 420 Express is based on the famous Caribbean 40 Flybridge Cruiser.

Stepping aboard, you’re met with a wide teak swimplatform and enormous cockpit that includes an aft-facing lounge and eutectic fridge/freezer, plus a smart hopper window.

Through the sliding doors, the modern saloon features textured vinyl trim and contrasting deckhead panels, offset by gloss teak trim and an elegant Navigator helm chair clad in UltraLeather.

Together with a forward master cabin and a portside bunkroom, a convertible saloon lounge brings the overnight capacity to seven persons, and the contemporary design theme continues via eye-catching saddle-stitching on lounges and cabin trim.

Engines

Power is provided by twin Cummins QSC 500hp shaftdrive marine diesel engines and the debut model has also been fitted with a Bluewater desalinator to cope with South Australia’s long runs between marinas.
