BOAT TEST CHRIS-CRAFT CORSAIR 28
Cafe Racers Part 2
Dressed in optional metallic silver, the Corsair 28 is rearing to go thanks also to twin 300hp Volvo Penta GXi petrol engines with sterndrives. Although there are only subtle changes - a re-arranged dash and deeper swimplatform - for the 2012 model year, the boat never fails to excite. In fact, it's been used as a prop in music clips, for celebratory shoots, movie promos and has appeared in fashion magazines.
Of course, Chris-Craft has long been famous in homeland America. These are the preferred runabouts of the rich and famous dating back to when the company made its boats from mahogany by hand. Hollywood greats, presidents and many moviemakers have loved to be seen aboard. Although moulded from fibreglass, the Corsair 28 has enough retro cues and timber accents to please the eye.
The signature tumblehome towards the transom remains an integral part of the moulding, as does a good amount of flare in the bow, where the teak-topped foredeck boasts bespoke brightwork, a sunpad and an impressive air horn. A windlass and self-stow anchor were fitted for ease of anchoring, while the elliptical grabrails ensure you can sit with security.
Behind the raked windscreen is a stunning perforated alloy dash inspired by a 1960s Aston Martin. The dash is well laid out and accommodating of a large-screen combo plotter. But the switch of most interest is that for the switchable exhaust that announces your presence well before you arrive over the horizon.
The cockpit layout is convivial, with plush leather-look vinyl upholstery on the U-shaped seating and deep bucket seats. A drawer fridge was fitted along with a concealed canopy. The boat even had underwater lights and optional LED headlights. Should you wish to retire, no worries, there's a decent cabin with vee-berth and infill, and electric toilet with holding tank. Stay the day and night. The 132-litre (pressurised) freshwater capacity will stretch a weekend.
The co-pilot is treated to a wonderful high-backed bucket seat fronting the aforesaid stylish elliptical grabrail, before a glovebox with Kenwood stereo wired to an amp and subwoofer. A Kenwood remote commander is also located alongside a similarly accommodating helm seat. Crank it up. And we did…
According to the official figures, the Corsair 28 hits 55mph or almost 48kts. It feels that fast, but always wonderfully in control. The way the boat banks through the turns and powers out of the bends is exhilarating. Look behind and you'll see a curtain of spray. The old company slogan, "a piece of the good life", remains true today. Runabout refined and redefined.
