The organisers of the Club Marine Southern 80 Ski Race said they are amazed at the quick response from local businesses after invitations were sent out inviting them to support the race.

Singled out for their support were McDonalds Echuca store owners, Gary and Jo Radford, who the organisers said have again shown their support of the Echuca-Moama region by becoming a major sponsor, including the naming rights to the lunchtime "on water" entertainment across the weekend. This event will include Victorian Waterski Association skiing demonstrations, drag boats races and much more.

The organizers said almost 100 other local Echuca-Moama businesses have also shown their support by donating well over $15,000 to help cover the costs, which the Moama Water Sports Club (MWSC) said is incurred to stage the race each year.

The Club set up a "Supporters Package" starting at as little as $100. However, a large number of supporters have chosen to take the gold package of $300. Supporters will be furnished with a sticker for their business’ window, allowing competitors and spectators to recognise the businesses that support the event.

President of the MWSC, Alan McDonald, said he was amazed by the quick response. "Within a day of the support letter hitting the mailboxes, we had an immediate response", he said.

"The community now has an understanding of the extreme financial pressure the Club has had to endure to keep the event going over the years.

"The MWSC is sincerely appreciative of the support given by the local business community, and especially, McDonalds Echuca. Without their fantastic help, the event would not survive in the long term."

The organizers also said that many businesses and individuals commented that they did not realise how much the Club provides for the event, which brings in over $22 million to the region.

Businesses and supporters which have not received a Supporters Pack invitation can ring the Club on (03) 5480 6754.

The 2010 Club Marine Southern 80 will be held from February 12-14, 2009. Visit www.southern80.com.au for more information.
