A bricklayer turned amateur snapper has taken out the top prize in the Club Marine Club Kids Fun Photo Contest, beating more than 2000 Australian and New Zealand entries along the way.

Jon Poyner, from NSW, was awarded the top prize after submitting this photo of an encounter between his daughter Georgia and a stingray at a boat ramp in Narooma, on the NSW south coast.

Poyner describes himself as a "self-taught" photographer who gets a lot of practice taking pictures of his children, Tess, Jakob and Georgia. The trick behind this unique "above-and-below" shot is, however, quite ingenious.

Poyner says he used a small plastic rubbish bin with a hole in one side and then glued a piece of glass over the hole with silicon sealing. "When we got to the boat ramp, I just put the camera in the bin and kept shooting until I got the shot," explained Poyner.

The top prize in the contest was a four-day trip for two to Andrew "ET" Ettingshausen’s Escape Sportfishing and Wilderness Lodge on Groote Eylandt, in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Poyner says he is very excited about heading to the tropical north with his daughter. "She’s never been on a plane before," said the proud dad. "This will definitely be one of the most memorable events of her childhood."

Launched in October 2009, the Club Kids Fun Photo Contest challenged boaters to submit their favourite photos of kids on or around the water. The contest ran for 12 months and received over 2000 photos.
