As Australia's coastal population continues to grow, the interest in recreational fishing increases with Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory states now providing the highest levels of participation.

The recreational freshwater and marine fishing industry provides a significant multi-billion contribution to the state, territory and National economy. Whether for pleasure or sport, there are such a huge variety of boats available from canoes for bait catching to kayaks, pontoon boats, dinghies and runabouts or charter boats and cruising yachts for big game fishing.

Black Marlin Fishing

With vast stretches of spectacular coast-land accessible throughout Australia - big game charter fishing has become a popular sport, with Cairns, Queensland now the world's big game black marlin capital. Beginning September 1966, big game fisherman began to land world record breaking mighty Black Marlin off the outer Great Barrier Reef and continue to achieve this feat today. Between the waters of Cairns and Lizard Island, every year from September to December, the marlin migrate here to spawn, attracting cruising yachts, charter boats and fisherman from throughout the world. An essential location for any big game angler, more Black Marlin are caught every year around the Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef than the remainder of the world combined.

Many anglers are now involved in the tagging of Billfish ( black, striped and blue marlin, sailfish, spearfish, swordfish) to encourage sustainability of the game-fish stocks and provide valuable research data. Australian Saltwater Gamefish tournaments now all incorporate a large tagging section and promote a catch and release ethos. Tags are placed within the shoulder of the fish with data including date and location of fish, boat, angler and captain's name, estimated size of fish, and its condition.

Although recognised as the world's premier fishing destination for the giant Black Marlin , Cairns is also one of the most globally diverse marine areas offering deep sea and big game fishing expeditions for anglers of all ages and experience. No matter what your goal is  with big game-fish, make Cairns the destination for your next fishing expedition.
